The Berlusconi Show

In The Berlusconi Show (BBC2) – a good title – journalist Mark Franchetti, who's lived away from his native country for 20 years, goes back to find out how the hell this clown came to lead a European democracy in the 21st century. To be fair, Franchetti's approach is much better than that: he speaks to lots of people on both sides, and looks at the historical context of Berlusconi's rise to power.
The media control, the alleged mafia connections and corruption, the links to the extreme right, the trials, the legislative changes, the escorts and young girls, the cosmetic surgery, the parties, the gaffes, the dissing of Angela Merkel, the referring to Barack Obama as "tanned". It's just that, when it's all presented together, you're left with your jaw on the floor. How the frigging frig did that happen? And again. And again. He's been elected three times.
"For 15 years, Italians have supported him with their democratic vote," says a young party member. "There are two explanations: either all Italians are stupid and don't realise who they are voting for, or for 15 years they have continued to trust him."
I'm not sure the two are mutually exclusive, are they? B could be because of A. And not all Italians, just a lot of them. Or maybe they're just very forgiving. Anyway, this was extraordinary, fascinating and worrying, all at the same time.

Nel suo The Berlusconi Show (BBC2) - un titolo azzeccato - Mark Franchetti, che è stato per vent'anni lontano dal suo paese, torna indietro negli anni per capire come diavolo ha fatto questo pagliaccio ad arrivare a guidare una democrazia europea del terzo millennio. A dire la verità, l’approccio di Franchetti va molto al di là di questo. Il giornalista intervista persone di vari schieramenti e punti di vista e osserva il contesto storico nel quale è avvenuta l’ascesa al potere di Berlusconi.
Il controllo dei mezzi di comunicazione, i legami con la mafia, la corruzione, i rapporti con l’estrema destra, le forzature legislative, le escort, gli interventi chirurgici, le feste, le gaffes, lo scherzo ad Angela Merkel, il riferirsi ad Obama come "abbronzato". Tutti aspetti e fatti già conosciuti, ma che non per questo smettono di lasciare lo spettatore esterrefatto a chiedersi: come diavolo è potuto succedere? Ancora e ancora. È stato eletto per tre volte.
A un certo punto un giovane militante del Popolo della libertà dice: “Per 15 anni, gli italiani hanno appoggiato Berlsuconi attraverso elezioni democratiche. Ci sono due spiegazioni: o gli italiani sono tutti stupidi e non si rendono conto a chi hanno dato il loro voto o hanno semplicemente fiducia in lui”.
Ma non è detto che le due possibilità si escludano a vicenda. La seconda potrebbe essere il risultato della prima. E il discorso non vale per tutti gli italiani, solo per molti di loro. O forse sono semplicemente molto indulgenti. In ogni modo, si tratta di un fatto allo stesso tempo affascinante e spaventoso.
